Interestingly, and a very meaningful sign of respect towards the wine’s quality, Opus One became the first US wine to be distributed via Bordeaux through La Place – the Bordeaux distribution network of négociants, increasing the winery’s global reach. The acquisition of additional vineyard plots, including 65 hectares of the mythical To Kalon vineyard, was key to this surge in concentration, structure and wondrous perfume. The first vintage, 1979, was released in 1984 and soon Opus One earned a reputation for just this harmonious union of Old World and New. Their goal was to craft a wine that combined the intensity and fruit purity of Napa, with the elegance of legendary Bordeaux. Established in 1979 as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, the two met in typically glamourous fashion whilst holidaying in Hawaii a few years earlier. Opus One is arguably Napa's most famous winery.

Mattress Firm hopes a slimmed down store footing will allow it to remain relevant with shoppers who need a new bed. In August, Casper announced it would open 200 stores in the next three years in an attempt to build loyalty with current shoppers and reach new ones. Still, physical retail remains an important component of the mattress market. And Mattress Firm’s parent company, Steinhoff International, has been bogged down with accounting woes that forced its CEO to resign last year. In addition, a top Mattress Firm supplier, Tempur Sealy International, stopped selling to the company over a pricing dispute. Last week, Amazon debuted its own memory foam mattress under its AmazonBasics line. Walmart has come out with its own brand: Allswell. The rise of online companies wasn’t the only source of pressure on Mattress Firm. “Consumers have long gone into traditional mattress stores feeling uninformed and have been subject to ridiculous price points,” Bob Phibbs, CEO of the consultancy Retail Doctor, told CNN Business in August.Ĭasper continued selling direct-to-consumer online, moving into bed frames, sheets, pillows, and dog mattresses, and it partnered with retailers like Nordstrom, Target, and West Elm to increase distribution.īy the time Mattress Firm launched its own bed-in-a-box brand Tulo in 2017, it was too deep in debt to escape its troubles. The company gained attention online with customers posting viral videos of themselves unboxing mattresses, racking up $100 million in sales in 2015.Ĭasper distinguished its business by pricing the only mattress it sold at the time below traditional competitors, as well as offering free delivery and a 100-day trial period at home.Ĭasper offered just three varieties of mattresses, which gave it an advantage over stores that sold a confusing array of soft mattresses, firm, foam, springy, and everything in between. Customers were also turned off by complicated and expensive delivery options. “Casper has turned a tired industry on its head with innovative products and a superior shopping experience.”Ĭasper believed that shoppers had grown weary of the traditional mattress-buying experience: going into a store, testing out a handful of mattresses for a few minutes, and rushing to a decision about an expensive item designed to last for years. “Traditional mattress retailers have been alienating customers for decades and are now buckling under pressure,” Philip Krim, Casper’s co-founder and CEO, said in an email. Mattress Firm built out its stores as an effective online direct-to-consumer model began to emerge.Ĭasper, as well as Tuft & Needle, Leesa, Purple, and Yogabed, took advantage of retailers clinging to the status quo by offering shoppers a new solution for their bedding needs: shipping mattresses in a box to their homes for no added costs. In a Chapter 11 filing, Stanger said that his company had “too many locations in close proximity to each other.” As store traffic slowed, costly leases turned into an albatross around Mattress Firm’s neck. “This transformational acquisition unites the nation’s two largest mattress specialty retailers, providing customers with convenience, value and choice,” Mattress Firm’s chief executive Steve Stagner said at the time.īut taking on more than 1,000 Sleepy’s stores left Mattress Firm over-retailed. Instead of investing in digital tools and shipping infrastructure, Mattress Firm expanded its store base at exactly the wrong moment. The company was constrained by its decision to buy retail chain Sleepy’s in 2015 for $780 million. It misjudged what shoppers demanded - convenience and low prices - and ignored the threat digital upstarts like Casper posed to its grip on the industry. The company failed to recognize that its marketplace was moving online until it was too late. Mattress Firm’s struggles have been, in part, self-inflicted. By the end of the year, the company may close up to 500 more. Mattress Firm has more than 3,300 stores across the country, and it plans to quickly shutter 200 of them. Mattress Firm filed for bankruptcy on Friday to escape hundreds of leases it could no longer afford in suburban shopping malls and on city streets. Beds-in-a-box have brought the country’s largest mattress retailer to its knees. This isn’t a unique system per se since there are other monster-taming games that have this exact same system, but it’s still an important difference that a player might want to know about the game. You’ll also get to bring twice as many monsters into battle in Monster Crown than a usual Pokemon game. It’s all about balancing the pros and cons of capitalizing on this monster synergy system and figure out how it can best work for your playstyle. Every time you switch monsters, your opponent’s monster will get to attack your newly-released monster first if an attack action is chosen. This system is truly unique and adds a whole new level of combat strategy to the gameplay, but of course, switching out mons during battle isn’t cost-free. Having synergy will also increase the typing coverage of a certain skill, allowing that one skill to be able to perfectly counter another monster type in addition to the existing one. Every bar you get will bolster your monster’s attack power, more so if you managed to get all 4 filled. How does it work? Well, by switching out your mons, you’ll gain a bar of synergy and you can accumulate these bars up to 4. However, the game added in a Monster Synergy system. It has the same “paper-scissors-stone”-style counters where certain types of monsters or skills will deal more effective damage against another specific type of monster. In Monster Crown, you’ll battle monsters as you do in any monster-taming games. One of the earliest differences you’ll notice is the combat. Now, despite the similarities, there are some markedly different features between the two games. The game features “legendaries” which I assume you can attempt to catch, along with boss-like NPC-vs-player battles as well. It can get a bit grindy, like most monster-taming games, though. It’s also important to train your monsters so that they are strong enough to take on tougher monsters in newer zones. though, you’ll be using Pacts rather than Pokeballs. So, this means that you’ll need to travel to different zones where there are different monsters to catch and tame. The game is obviously designed not to only pay homage to the game that has given rise to a whole new monster-taming genre, but it is also designed so that fans of the latter can easily dive into this game and just get started. Of course, like every other new tamer out there, you’ll want to strive to become the “very best like no one ever was”! If you’ve played any Pokemon game before, you should be able to hop right into Monster Crown. Similar to Pokemon, you play as a 14-year-old boy or girl who is just embarking on their monster-taming journey with their very first starter Pokemon which they’ve gotten by filling up some questionnaire at the back of some comic book and mailing it in. Monster Crown may still be a work-in-progress, but the game already looks and feels good, despite the hardcore elements, and it also plays well enough. There are plenty of Pokemon-like monster-taming games out there but none of them are as challenging as Monster Crown! The game features a unique synergy-based gameplay mechanism that adds a whole new level to monster battles, plus losing everything you have with you when you lost a battle makes it a whole lot costlier to lose fights. We will be updating this review once the game is launched. Travel the world taming any and all monsters you can find Train your monsters by battling other monsters in the wild or even other trainers Enjoy a tougher and more challenging version of a monster-taming game Disclaimer: Note that this is merely a preview of the upcoming, Pokemon-like, monster-taming game, Monster Crown. It was also the second of four #1 Country albums for her. Hasten itself spent several weeks in the Top Three of the Billboard album charts. This was Ronstadt's third album to go Platinum. A seductive reworking of Patsy Cline's classic "Crazy' was a Top 10 Country hit for Linda in early 1977. An exquisite treatment of the Tracy Nelson standard "Down So Low" and two Ronstadt-penned songs completed an array of immaculately chosen and delivered songs. The album showcased Ronstadt by way of songs such as the likes of Warren Zevon's "Hasten Down The Wind" and Karla Bonoff's "Someone To Lay Down Beside Me", both of whom would indeed soon be making a name for themselves in the singer-songwriter world. You'll scare the horse,' which by accident had happened by in that one fleeting moment. But this was shot outside her Malibu beach home, and what she has just said, in fact, is 'Don't shoot. 'You can give me weeds, whites, and wine.' sang Linda, endearing her to millions. It is a more serious, more poignant album than its predecessors and won immediate critical acclaim from critics and the general public alike. Linda Ronstadt 'Hasten Down The Wind,' Malibu 1975. It represented a slight departure from 1974's Heart Like A Wheel and 1975's Prisoner In Disguise in that she chose to showcase new songwriters over the traditional Country Rock sound she had been producing up to this point. The album earned Linda her second of a record 10 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female in early 1977. Ronstadt was the first female artist in history to accomplish this feat. While some critics may have preferred Joni Mitchell's intellectualism, Bonoff and Ronstadt tapped directly into the internal experiences of the American everywoman.Hasten Down The Wind is a 1976 album by singer/songwriter/producer Linda Ronstadt and Ronstadt's third straight million-selling album. Instead of the rush of newfound love, “Lose Again” deals with the tribulation of maintaining long-term relationships after the bloom is gone. Together they formulated a realistic, grownup perspective for female pop music. We were shooting on the beach outside some music producer’s house in Malibu Colony. Listen to Hasten Down the Wind (Live) Remastered by Jackson Browne, 74 Shazams. Tracy Nelson gave Ronstadt “Down So Low,” a husky blues about a rough breakup, while Karla Bonoff-who wrote “Lose Again,” “If He’s Ever Near," and “Someone to Lay Down Beside Me”-is the album’s hidden star. HASTEN DOWN THE WIND, with its extraordinary cover photograph, is an all-time classic, sadly overlooked these days, but rightfully one of the great albums to ever come out of the 70s or any decade for that matter. But more crucial is its inclusion of contemporary women songwriters. Like its predecessors, the album looks to Ronstadt’s peers (Zevon, Ry Cooder) and her formative idols (Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be the Day,” an extra-sultry version of Patsy Cline’s “Crazy”). Named for the celebrated Warren Zevon song of the same name (sung here with Don Henley), Hasten Down the Wind shows Linda Ronstadt outgrowing the boisterously girlish persona that had made her a hippie icon. One company that is cool about discussing their implementation is CCP, creators of Eve online. C++ and OpenGL (for Mac) and Direct3D (for PC) can be assumed as the implementation languages for the game clients because that's what games are made with. They use Lua for user interface scripting. The game simulations themselves will be built using the same techniques as any networked 3D game, so you can look towards resources for that problem domain to learn more.įor the big daddy, World of Warcraft, we can guess that their database is Oracle because Blizzard's job listings frequently cite Oracle experience as a requirement/plus. Online games are going to have their own protocols built on top of TCP/IP or UDP. One thing that is fairly certain is that since MMOs by and large use a custom client and 3D renderer they don't use HTTP because they aren't web browsers. It does gives you a good idea of what's involved.īecause MMOs by and large require the resources of a business to develop and deploy, at which point they are valuable company IP, there isn't a ton of publicly available information about implementations. The backend for Wowemu is amazingly simple (I tried it in 2005 however) and probably a complete over simplification of the database schema. This is what the private WoW servers run off. This is based on ApireCore which is an MMO simulator, or basically a reverse engineer of the WoW protocol. Have a look for Wowemu (there's no official site and I don't want to link to a dodgy site). For the big five MMOs I imagine there are teams of 10-20 very intelligent, mathematically gifted developers working on this daily and there isn't a MMO out there that has got it right yet, most break after 100 players. The server is having to deal with 100s of spells being sent its way, which it must calculate damage amounts for each one. For those that do have 100s of people in one area, there is usually high latency. Most MMOs have zones which limit this to a certain amount of people. How do the "engines" work, to centrally process hundreds of conflicting gameplay events? You don't care if a bit of latency causes the client to lose their world position. It's fast as it makes no guarantees the packet will be received. For instances (dungeons), usually a new process is launched for each group, which would mean there is a dispatcher service somewhere mananging this (analogous to a threadpool) Do they use other protocols? because HTTP does not allow servers to push data to clients. The server your client talks to will be a server running a daemons or service that sits idle listening for connections. Do they manage with scripts that execute on page requests? or installed services that run in the background and manage communication with connected clients? I'd guess the servers will be running on Linux, BSD or Solaris almost 99% of the time. What server infrastructure are they built on? especially with so many clients connected and communicating in real time. I would suggest you check over on for books covering this topic. The exact event processing mechanism depends on the requirements of the game designer, but generally I expect that incoming events go into a priority queue (prioritized by time received and/or time sent and probably other criteria along the lines of "how bad is it if we ignore this event?"). Most games are segmented into "worlds", limiting the number of players that are in the same virtual universe to the number of game events that one server (probably with lots of CPU's and lots of memory) can reasonably process. They probably use a custom TCP and/or UDP based protocol (look into socket communication).a service that listens for TCP and/or UDP messages). MMORPG's that I'm familiar with probably don't use web services for communication (since they are stateless) but rather a custom server-side program (e.g.We use Amazon AWS to almost instantly add and remove virtual servers. I'm currently running a large financial services app that needs to scale up and down depending on time of day and time of year. This is well-suited to Cloud Computing by the way. add additional servers as load increases. The server infrastructure needs to support the ability to scale out. Here are some general thoughts to your bullet points: Many roads lead to Rome, and many architectures lead to MMORPG's. |
